  • UniGrain has a proud and successful record as a cereal, grain and animal nutrition miller. 

    We are seeking Mechanical Engineers and Mechanical Engineering Technicians join our dedicated teams in Wagin, Western Australia and Smeaton (Ballarat), Victoria. These permanent full time roles operate on a 24/7 shift.

    Reporting to the Oat Mill Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining and adjusting the milling equipment for our Oat Mill, Flaking Mill and Stockfeed Pellet Mill.

    Our equipment if predominately Bühler, however we also use Streckel & Schrader, Cimbria, Petkus Satake and Westrup, Esse Gi and Andritz equipment.

    Production is monitored via the use of WinCos, Supervising Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).

    Your main duties will include:
    • Assisting in preparing drawings, plans and designs for mechanical engineering work under the direction of supervisors for PLC controlled production and packaging equipment
    • Assisting Mechanical Engineers and Engineering Technologists in the design of PLC controlled production and oat packaging equipment and plant
    • Operating, monitoring and adjusting state of the art PLC production equipment to ensure optimum mixture, flow rate and moisture content; including colour sorters, paddy tables, dryers etc.
    • Assembling and installing new and modified mechanical assemblies, components, sorters, paddy tables, roller mills and hydraulic power systems
    • Collecting and analysing data, carrying out complex computations and preparing diagrams for PLC controlled production and packaging equipment and other equipment as required
    • Organising and supervising inspection and maintenance of PLC production equipment, oat milling machinery and bag packaging plant and machinery
    • Ensuring that designs and finished work are within Unigrain and Buhler specifications, regulations and contract provisions where applicable
    • Responsibility for adjustment and calibration of sensitive measuring equipment within set parameters including temperature controls, metal detectors and magnets
    • Fully comply with all company OH&S procedures and all Australian OH&S regulations
    • Implementing best milling practice to ensure optimal yield from raw oats
    Engineers must be physically fit to cope with the numerous stairs within the Mill and must be able to work in dusty environments.

    To be successful in this position the following is desirable:
    • 3 years relevant experience with the milling equipment and PLCs used on either site, preferably gained from working in a grain mill
    • A formal qualification in mechanical or electrical engineering
    • Excellent knowledge of SQF and HACCP programs
    • Strong computer skills
    • Excellent communication and relationship building skills
    • A current Drivers Licence and your own reliable transport
    • A strong commitment to a safe working environment
    We are also looking for a Quality Analyst Technician join our team.

    You will be required to:
    • Test and record finished products for flavour, colour, taste, texture and nutritional content
    • Manage internal audit by validating the quality tests performed by the production staff in order to constantly meet the customer product specifications and ensure safety and consistency of the processes applied.
    • Perform investigations and analyses regarding customer complaints or product issues
    • Assist with external audits by providing information related to Certificate of Analysis documentation, laboratory tests and results and internal practices observed in the Flaking Mill
    To be successful in this position you will have the following:
    • Experience as Quality Analyst with particular emphasis on quality within a grain processing facility (desirable)
    • Tertiary or higher education in food safety or occupational health and safety qualification (desirable)
    • Excellent knowledge of SQF and HACCP programs
    A remuneration package of $60,000 to $70,000 will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
