Job Overview:
The Cook will be responsible for preparing nutritious, balanced kosher meals for approx. 45 to 60 students of Ohel Chana Seminary in a kosher commercial kitchen. The role involves meal planning, food preparation, managing kitchen stock, supervising cleaning staff, and ensuring high kitchen hygiene standards. The Cook will also be expected to ensure kosher dietary laws are observed and procurement of products are in line with these specifications. They will also modify meals based on students' dietary restrictions (e.g., allergies, gluten-free) and prepare meals for special events such as trips and special events. The individual must ensure strict adherence to kosher dietary laws in all aspects of food preparation, handling, and storage.
Key Responsibilities:
Meal Preparation and Menu Planning:- Menu plan and prepare balanced, nutritious, and meals for students .
- Ensure all meals adhere to kosher laws, including the separation of meat and dairy, the use of kosher-certified ingredients, and proper supervision of food preparation.
- Modify and adapt the menu to accommodate students with food allergies, sensitivities, or dietary restrictions (e.g., gluten-free, vegetarian).
Stock Management:- Monitor stock levels and place orders with groceries, butcher, greengrocer, and dairy suppliers as needed.
- Ensure that all food storage complies with government standards, including proper labelling.
- Ensure that meat and dairy foods and equipment must always be kept separate.
Food Safety and Hygiene:- Supervise and ensure that kitchen staff maintains a clean, organized, and hygienic kitchen at all times, adhering to kosher standards.
- Implement food safety standards, including proper food storage, preparation, and handling techniques.
- Label and store any leftover food properly in containers for future use, ensuring kosher laws are followed for storage and reheating.
Supervision and Teamwork:- Supervise cleaning staff to ensure the kitchen remains in a high standard of cleanliness, especially in between meal preparation times, with an emphasis on maintaining kosher standards.
- Work collaboratively with other staff members to ensure the kitchen runs efficiently and effectively.
Special Meal Preparation:- Prepare meals for students' trips, camps and special events.
General Administration:- Keep accurate records of inventory, food orders, and meal plans.
- Maintain communication with the administration regarding any changes or special requests for meals.
Qualifications and Skills:- Minimum one or more years of relevant proven experience as a Cook in a commercial kosher kitchen, preferably in an educational or religious setting.
- Strong knowledge of kosher dietary laws.
- Strong knowledge of food safety regulations.
- Excellent organizational, time management and multitasking skills, with attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with other staff members whilst having the ability to work independently and manager daily kitchen operations.
- Current 'Working with Children Check'.
- Current 'Food Safety Certificate'.
Additional Information:- Remuneration: $75,000 - $85,000 p.a.+ superannuation
