The Modifications Department Manager is responsible for the end-to-end leadership of Phoenix Containers' modifications workshop. This is a hands-on management role that demands a balance of operational discipline, people management, technical knowledge, and strategic thinking. You will be accountable for the operational performance, quality, safety, and continuous improvement of the modifications department, ensuring every job leaves our workshop to the highest standard and within the agreed timeframe and budget.
Key Responsibilities:- Lead and manage the Modifications Department, overseeing daily workshop operations, team performance, and production outcomes
- Supervise, mentor, and develop workshop staff to build a skilled, accountable, and high-performing team
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate modification projects to ensure jobs are completed safely, efficiently, and within agreed timeframes
- Monitor workflow across multiple projects, managing priorities, resources, and production requirements
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and quality control, ensuring all modifications meet customer specifications and company expectations
- Implement and improve quality processes, investigate issues, and drive continuous improvement initiatives
- Manage departmental budgets, labour, materials, and consumable costs while identifying efficiencies and reducing waste
- Develop and maintain workshop procedures, systems, and processes to improve productivity and consistency
- Champion workplace health and safety standards, ensuring compliance with WH&S requirements, risk assessments, and safe work practices
- Manage inventory, procurement, and material availability to support smooth workshop operations
- Collaborate with internal teams, including estimating and sales, to ensure accurate job planning, costing, and delivery
Requirements:
Equivalent experience considered but ideally the applicant will have:- 5+ years' experience in a trade, manufacturing, fabrication, or construction environment (welding, steel fabrication, or container modification background highly relevant)
- 3+ years in a supervisory or management role leading a workshop, production, or trades team
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple concurrent jobs/projects to deadlines and budgets
- Experience in quality control/inspection processes within a manufacturing or fabrication setting
- Experience managing departmental costs, budgets, and reporting on variances
- Background in procurement or inventory/stock management is highly regarded
Qualifications & Certifications:- Trade qualification (e.g., Certificate III/IV in Fabrication, Engineering, Carpentry, or a related trade)
- Diploma or Certificate IV in Leadership & Management (or equivalent experience in lieu)
- Formal WH&S qualifications (e.g., Cert IV in WHS, or demonstrated equivalent experience) given the safety compliance responsibilities
- Current driver's licence
- Forklift licence (LF) (ideal)
- White Card (construction induction)
Skills & Attributes:- Strong people leadership and team-building skills - proven ability to motivate a workshop team
- Sound understanding of quality management systems and continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., 5S, Lean)
- Working knowledge of WH&S legislation, SWMS, and risk assessment processes
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to juggle competing priorities
- Competent with job tracking/scheduling software and basic reporting (Excel or similar)
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for liaising with staff, clients, and other departments (sales, estimating)
- Problem-solving mindset with a track record of resolving quality or production issues
Desirable (not essential):- Prior experience specifically in shipping container modification, transportable buildings, or modular construction
- Experience with ISO or other formal quality certification frameworks
- Estimating or costing experience
